July 31, 2008

I probably will not be posting regularly for the next week or two. I'm moving out of Alaska on Friday (Aug 1), and into the 'Sconnie apartment on Tuesday (Aug 5). I have no idea when I'll get around to having the Internet hooked up in the new place, so posting will be sporadic at best. I'll continue to take pictures, but you may not see them for a while.

Breakfast, 9:30 a.m.

The peaches were staring to get wrinkly, so I figured I'd
better eat one.

Lunch, 1:45 p.m.

Peanut butter sammitch, cherries, applesauce, and an
apple cinnamon Nutri-Grain bar.

Dinner, 6:30 p.m.

Frozen Stouffer's. It's so bad for me, but I love it so much
and it's so easy to make when you're busy doing 500 other
things.

Snacks, 11:00 p.m.

After seven straight hours of cleaning (12 for Jon), we took
a Wal-Mart and Village Inn break...for additional cleaning
supplies and provisions. We intended to only get a slice of
pie, and Jon stuck to that, but...I didn't. I couldn't decided
between salty and sweet, so at the last second I ordered both.
It was bad of me, but that's how it goes. Plus, cleaning is very
hard work -- and I moved a couch, a bed, a desk, and a
dresser today, too...so I feel that I got quite a bit of exercise
today. Also, Jon insisted that I photograph the sugar packet.
He's not yet accustomed to my habit of downing them like
shots. And actually, I broke myself of that habit for several
years...I've only recently taken it up again.

July 30, 2008

Breakfast, 10:30 a.m.

Peanut butter on wheat bread, and a handful cherries.

Lunch, 1:30 p.m.

Leftover turkey chili.

Snack, 4:30 p.m.

Jon's mom calls this "breakaway bread." Jon spent a few days in
Valdez with his family this weekend, and his mom sent a loaf of
bread back with him. (The cherries, too.) The bread is sweet,
and buttery, and yummy. We don't have a microwave
anymore, so this is Jon puttingthe bread on a cookie sheet to
reheat it in the oven -- because you have to eat homemade bread
warm. There's just no choice in the matter.

Dinner, 6:30 p.m.

My friend Leslie and her husband Thomas and daughter Kyra (who
are also friends; I don't mean to imply that they aren't) took me out
for one last dinner at Villa Nova, my new favorite Anchorage Italian
restaurant. This is "Ravioli alla Rosa" -- cheese ravioli stuffed with
spinach, and topped with spinach and both fresh and sun-dried
tomatoes. I ate all of the tomatoes, and only some of the spianch. The
sauce is a tomato wine...and yes, cream, but not as heavy a cream as,
say, an alfredo.

Snack, 11:45 p.m.

There was half a pint of Imagine Whirled Peace Ben & Jerry's in
the freezer, and it had been there for weeks...Jon decided he didn't
really like it. He told me I could eat it, and I have to say...it's
certainly not my favorite ice-cream flavor. Still, I savored it since
it was honest to god ice-cream, with milk -- not sorbet, not frozen
yogurt.

Breakfast, 9:30 a.m.

Still no fruit...we still have a few peaches, and I have no
desire to eat them.

Lunch, 1:45 p.m.

More of the shells & cheese concoction. It wasn't very
good today -- I think it sat in the fridge a day too long --
so I didn't eat too much of it.

Snack, 4:15 p.m.

The last of the Cinnamon Toast Crunch. You will not
be seeing it again for a while...I'll probably buy Quaker
Oat Squares as my next cereal purchase. Very yummy,
and much better for me than the sugary stuff.

Snack, 6:15 p.m.
Not pictured: Chicken cordon bleu balls at the Blue Fox.
No picture because I was on my way to a softball game--
I play for the Blue Fox-- and so I didn't have my purse
with me. (I keep my camera in my purse these days,
because I pretty much always have my purse handy.)

Dinner, 11:00 p.m.

A bowl of turkey chili...it looks really dark in this picture
for some reason.
Breakfast, 9:15 a.m.

I am so sick of peaches. I couldn't stomach the idea
of eating one...so I just had the peanut butter bread.

Lunch, 12:00 p.m.

Leftover pizza.

Snack, 5:00 p.m.

Applesauce. I actually had 2 of these.

Dinner, 10:00 p.m.

Whole wheat spaghetti with marinara (out of a jar) and
some Parmesan cheese. Again, remember...small plates.

July 27, 2008

Breakfast, 11:30 a.m.

Peanut butter on wheat bread and a peach. I am so
sick of peaches.

Snack, 3:30 p.m.

Apple Cinnamon Nutri-Grain bar.

Lunch, 7:30 p.m.

I'm not terribly comfortable with calling this "lunch,"
both because of its size and the lateness of the hour.
But it was my second meal today. It's penne pasta with
tomatoes, shrimp, and...yes...alfredo sauce. I refrained
from eating the whole thing, though; I left maybe 1/3.

Dinner, 12:40 a.m.

Hamburger & mushroom pizza from Capri. I know...
I ate dinner very late. But also realize this: it took the
frickin' pizza place AN HOUR AND A HALF to deliver
the damn pizza. I realize it was Saturday night, and
they were probably busy, but seriously? 90 minutes?

July 25, 2008

Breakfast, 10:15 a.m.

The peaches still weren't ripe, so I had a Nutri-Grain bar
instead of a fruit.

Lunch, 1:45 p.m.

The Velveeta Shells & Cheese, salsa, ground beef, and
black bean concoction.

Snack, 4:30 p.m.

My new favorite snack food.

Snack #2, 7:45 p.m.

Jon was supposed to be off of work at 5:00, and we were
supposed to be going out for dinner...or at least having
dinner together. I waited for him to come home, and I
waited, and I waited some more, but finally I had a snack
because I was starving. Oh yeah. It's a peanut butter
sammitch.

Dinner, 11:00 p.m.

Long story short, we didn't end up going out...or even
having dinner together. I had too much cheese pizza
way too late at night.
Breakfast, 10:00 a.m.

Peanut butter on wheat toast, and a peach. The peach
wasn't ripe enough so I didn't eat very much of it.

Snack, 11:00 a.m.

Today was a bad food day right off the bat. A student
brought donuts to the writing center as a way of saying
"thank you!" to the tutors, which was awesome. I chose
this one because it was on the small side, and because it
wasn't covered in frosting. I couldn't not eat a donut, since
she was right there...but let's be honest. I would have
eaten it even if she wasn't. I'm just proud of myself for
avoiding the big gooey cinnamon roll.

Lunch, 12:30 p.m.

To continue the "bad food day" trend, one of my bosses in
the LRC brought in pizza -- it was a combination "thank
you" and "going away" pizza. She'd offered to take me to
lunch, but since I'm either tutoring or teaching at lunch time
every day that didn't work out. So...this was the next best
thing. It's from Moose's Tooth and is half Aloha Escape, half
Wild Mushroom. I had one slice of Aloha Escape, and half a
slice of the mushroom. So good.

Snack, 4:30 p.m.

More cottage cheese.

Dinner, 6:30 p.m.

Because Moose's Tooth wasn't enough for one day, I also
had dinner at Bear's Tooth. (I made plans to meet my
friend Kerry there for over a week ago.) I had chicken
enchiladas in mole sauce, with rice and refried black beans.
I ate all of the rice and beans, and 1.5 enchiladas. The
problem with leaving is that I've had SO many lunch and
dinner plans in these past few weeks to say "good-bye" to
people. (We're writers with day jobs. What else are we
going to do? Drink ourselves silly on a weeknight?) I'm
enjoying the food and the friends, but I'm sure my waist is
not enjoying the calories. (The scale is on pallet to Wisconsin,
so I can't verify.)

Snack, 11:30 p.m.

The other half of the sorbet.

July 24, 2008

Breakfast, 9:30 a.m.

Peanut butter on wheat bread, and a peach. My throat
still hurts, but other than that I'm feeling much better
today.

Lunch, 1:30 p.m.

I microwaved a single-serving lasagna.

Snack, 4:30 p.m.

Lowfat cottage cheese. This is a 1 lb. container, and I
ate a good portion of it. It felt very good on my throat,
all cold and slimy...so I kept eating even after I stopped
being hungry. I enjoyed it. I haven't had cottage
cheese in years, but I think I need to start eating it again.

Dinner, 6:30 p.m.

Why yes...that is sushi. And the appetizers were
edemamme and some weird chicken-and-veggie paste
that we spread on lettuce leaves and rolled up like
burritos. I have no idea what it's called. The dinner
itself was three kinds of sushi...one was way too spicy
for my liking, one was lobster and crab, and one was
called a "crunch" roll and I have no idea what was in it.
All in all, it wasn't a horrible experience, but also not one
that I'll be repeating any time soon. I ate one roll of each
type of sushi, a handful of edemamme, and one lettuce
burrito.

Oh...wait. You guys are probably wondering how the hell
I ended up in a sushi restaurant. Well, it's like this. I was
supposed to meet my writing center acquaintance Mary for
drinks. But, still being a little sickly, I didn't want to go to a
bar. I called and asked if she wanted to do dinner instead,
and told her to pick a place. I don't know Mary well enough
to wrinkle my nose and say, "Oh my god, ew," so I went to
the sushi place. And like I said...it wasn't bad. Not my style,
but edible. (In fact, the edemamme was quite good.) I don't
know what the deal is with Mary, but I really like her even
though I don't know her. Very few people could not only get
me out of the house when I'm feeling sickly, but also get me
to eat raw lobster. Seriously. Mary, you win a prize.

Snack, 11:40 p.m.

Raspberry sorbet. About half a pint.

July 23, 2008

Breakfast, 10:00 a.m.

I felt like crap today -- I seriously contemplated calling
in sick to the Writing Center and canceling my class. I
didn't want to eat anything, but I forced myself to have a
peanut butter sandwich. The thought of fruit was just too
much. This is my reward for being a trooper and showing
up for my softball game -- never mind that it was windy,
raining, and 50 degrees, and half of my team decided to
ditch. Plus, I was up late last night. Plus, I've been stretching
myself too thin with teaching, tutoring, and moving. It's a
miracle I managed to stay healthy as long as I did, really.

Lunch, 1:15 p.m.

I was feeling a little better by lunch time. I wasn't hungry,
but I figured I should eat because I was feeling a tad bit
weak. I felt marginally better after the food.

Snack, 4:30 p.m.

I was so tired when I got home; I almost passed out at
my desk while my students were working on their
research projects. I thought maybe some food and
caffeine would perk me up, but...no. I was so tired I
couldn't concentrate on reading, or grading, or email,
or mindless Facebook games...so I took a nap. By which
I mean I laid in bed feeling miserable because my head
hurt and my nose was running all over the place. So
eventually I got up and made some dinner, even though
I still wasn't very hungry. My mom always made me eat
when I had a cold; she said it would be harder for my body
to fight the germs if I didn't have any fuel for it. At 27, I
still follow this advice because it makes some sense even
if I can't explain it any better than I could when I was five
years old.

Dinner, 7:45 p.m.

My mom used to feed me mac-n-cheese when I wasn't
feeling good...although that was more of a "tummy ache"
food than a "head cold" food. However, I didn't have any
chicken noodle soup in the cupboard, my normal cold food,
so I made do.

Snack, 8:15 p.m.

Jon came home from work shortly after I finished my
dinner. Not knowing I was feeling like hell, he'd brought
me a huge-ass cookie from his restaurant. It just didn't
taste very good -- because I'm sick, not because it was a
shitty cookie -- and eating it was a chore. I only had
about half of this.

July 22, 2008

Breakfast, 9:30 a.m.

I'm out of bananas, and I have a butt-load of peaches,
so I will be eating those instead for a while.

Lunch, 1:30 p.m.

Leftover goulash. Or whatever you want to call it. That
thing I made last night.

Snack, 4:30 p.m.

Dry Cinnamon Toast Crunch. It's almost gone...just a
few more bowls.

Dinner, 7:30 p.m.

Subway Value Meal: 6" turkey and ham on wheat (yes, I
ate the veggies), Baked BBQ Lays, and Diet Coke.

Snack, 10:00 p.m.

These are the yummiest appetizer ever invented: Chicken
Cordon Blue Balls from the Blue Fox. They're balls of white
chicken meat stuffed with melted cheese and bits of ham.
I was skeptical at first, but they have proven to be divine.
The Blue Fox sponsors my softball team, so...you know.
We go there after our games. I don't usually eat, but today
these were just calling to me. It happens from time to time.
